Jeremy M. Wong
Biography
Baritone Jeremy M. Wong is rapidly building a name for himself as a soloist and ensemble singer on both the international and U.S. stages. The 2016-17 season saw his exciting debut with the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra, singing the bass solo to Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor under the baton of maestro JoAnn Falletta; he has also appeared as a member of the Carnegie Hall Chamber Chorus, performing in a joint concert with Peter Phillips’ Tallis Scholars. Mr. Wong has had the privilege of lending his voice to many other project choruses, including the Junges Stuttgarter Bach Ensemble—where he also made his international solo debut—under maestro Hans-Christoph Rademann and Kathy Saltzman Romey, the Weimarer Bach Kantaten Academie under the baton of maestro Helmuth Rilling, and as a core member of the Berwick Chorus of the Oregon Bach Festival under the direction of Matthew Halls and maestro Rilling. Locally, Mr. Wong regularly collaborates with Early Music Hawai‘i as conductor, soloist, and chorister, and has soloed and performed with the O‘ahu Choral Society, Windward Choral Society, and the Bach Chamber Orchestra and Lutheran Church of Honolulu Choir. Recent highlights include Donald McCullough’s Holocaust Cantata and Bach’s Magnificat with the O‘ahu Choral Society, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem with the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, and Handel’s Messiah with the Maui Chamber Orchestra. An active recitalist and burgeoning song interpreter, he has presented faculty recitals at UH Mānoa centered around German Lieder, Vaughan Williams’ Songs of Travel, and Tom Cipullo’s Another Reason Why I Don’t Keep a Gun in the House.

Mr. Wong is equally active as a conductor, adjudicator, and educator. He is currently the Choral Director at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, conducting the University Chorus, Concert Choir, and Chamber Singers; he has also taught applied voice to music majors. He has recently served on the faculty of Hawai‘i Pacific University as their Interim Director of Choral Activities, where he conducted the select International Vocal Ensemble as well as the International Chorale. Mr. Wong has long been interested in the greater choral community of Hawai‘i, having led many well-established groups such as The Honolulu Chorale as Music Director and the Lutheran Church of Honolulu Choir as Interim Choral Director. He has adjudicated concerts and festivals organized by Hawai‘i Music Festivals, and has conducted choral and vocal clinics at high schools and universities all over the island of O‘ahu.

Mr. Wong holds a Master of Music in vocal performance from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa with Maya Hoover, and a Bachelor of Musical Arts from DePauw University, where his primary instructor was Caroline B. Smith. Vocally, he has coached privately with Japanese-German baritone Teru Yoshihara, baritone Andrew Garland, and has performed in the masterclasses of Sylvia McNair and Dawn Upshaw. His conducting mentors include Jan Harrington, Gregory Ristow and Miguel Felipe, and he has participated in the classes of master teachers such as Vance George, Henry Leck, and Rodney Eichenberger.
